Emission-free demolition in medieval fortress

Breaking up concrete floors? No problem. And that in an underground vault? Challenging – but solvable. During the reconstruction of a part of the Rosenberg fortress in Kronach, Upper Franconia, only machines with compact dimensions that could be used in confined spaces and work without exhaust emissions were considered for this task. An ideal construction site for Wacker Neuson’s zero emission solutions.

Strong team: emission-free demolition work

Since the work was to be carried out in an underground corridor system, only machines without exhaust emissions could be used. “We were looking for a compact excavator for the demolition work as well as a small dumper for material transport, with which we could also work without restrictions in the cramped casemate vault,” explains Dieter Kürschner, owner of the construction company Kürschner Straßen- und Tiefbau GmbH, which carried out the work. “In addition, it was important to us for the use in the almost closed rooms that the machines are not only powerful, but also do not emit any exhaust emissions”. These are high requirements – which could be met with the zero emission solutions from Wacker Neuson: Both the 1-ton excavator 803 dual power and the track dumper DT10e were able to fully exploit their strengths in zero emission working in the vaults of Rosenberg Fortress.

Perfect interaction of excavator and dumper

The mini-excavator 803 is the smallest excavator in Wacker Neuson’s portfolio and impressed with its high performance at a width of just 700 millimeters. In addition to the integrated diesel engine, the compact excavator is equipped with the electro-hydraulic unit HPU8. Electrical operation enabled efficient work inside the vaults without being restricted by exhaust gases or noise. With constant power in both diesel and electric operation, the connected hydraulic hammer was used to break up the concrete.

In the next step, the excavator loaded the demolition material into the bucket of the electrical track dumper DT10e. Reliably, quietly and without emissions, the machine transported the demolished material from the vault. Even the sometimes very uneven ground was no problem: thanks to the deep batteries, the emission-free track dumper is particularly stable. The pendulum rollers also adapt to any surface.

Thanks to the perfect interplay between the mini-excavator 803 dual power and the dumper DT10e, a total of 100 cubic meters of material were removed from the corridors of the fortress during the work, with the mini-excavator 803 removing approximately one cubic meter of material per hour. True to the motto: “Small but powerful!” Dieter Kürschner was very satisfied with the rented machines:

“Wacker Neuson was able to offer me exactly the solutions we needed for this very special construction site.”
